Does $11.34 Buy Your Vote?

One member of DailyKos estimated that for the amount of gas she buys on average in a 90 day period would net her a whopping $11.34 if the McCain/Clinton holiday on the 18.4 cent gas tax were enacted:

Even conservative Thomas L. Friedman (he of "Friedman Units" fame) gets how monumentally bad an idea this is:

The McCain-Clinton gas holiday proposal is a perfect example of what energy expert Peter Schwartz of Global Business Network describes as the true American energy policy today: “Maximize demand, minimize supply and buy the rest from the people who hate us the most.”

They hope it'll get them a few votes, but they completely neglect the fact that it will encourage increased consumption, take essential revenue away from the transportation budget, and leave us right back where we are now in a few months.

The simple truth is this is pure political pandering to folks they assume don't know better or won't bother to do the math. So take a guess at how many gallons of gas you use in three months, multiply by 0.184, and then ask yourself, "Is that all my vote is worth?"

Folks, it's time to tell them that we're smarter than they give us credit for and demand that they propose sustainable energy solutions instead of trying to buy votes on the cheap.

Please forward this to everyone you know.
