Does $11.34 Buy Your Vote?

One member of DailyKos estimated that for the amount of gas she buys on average in a 90 day period would net her a whopping $11.34 if the McCain/Clinton holiday on the 18.4 cent gas tax were enacted:

Even conservative Thomas L. Friedman (he of "Friedman Units" fame) gets how monumentally bad an idea this is:

Military leaders: "I think his knee-jerk response factor is a little scary."

It is not difficult in Washington to find high-level military officials who have had close encounters with John McCain's temper, and who find it worrisome. Politicians sometimes scream for effect, but the concern is that McCain has, at times, come across as out of control. It is difficult to find current or former officers willing to describe those encounters in detail on the record. That's because, by and large, those officers admire McCain. But that doesn't mean they want his finger on the proverbial button, and they are supporting Clinton or Obama instead.

McCain makes fun of teenage girls

Found this gem from 1998 thanks to a regular on DailyKos:

The fact that McCain had made the tasteless joke was reported in major newspapers, as was the vain attempt by his press secretary to initially deny what McCain had done. But in several major newspapers, the joke itself was kept a secret. When McCain subsequently apologized to President Clinton, the Washington Post, in its personality section, noted the apology but said the joke "was too vicious to print."

John McCain is breaking the law

From the DNC

Sean --

I'm Joe Sandler, General Counsel for the DNC. Yesterday we filed a complaint with the FEC after John McCain decided to break the law by ignoring the rules laid out as part of the federal matching funds program.

I don't know if you saw the news, but the press covered the complaint all day. John McCain himself directly responded to Governor Dean at a press conference, saying "We're doing exactly what Howard Dean did in a previous election and what the FEC ruled in the case of Congressman Gephardt."

You call this Straight Talk?

I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry at the patheticness of this:

Q: “What about grants for sex education in the United States? Should they include instructions about using contraceptives? Or should it be Bush’s policy, which is just abstinence?”

Mr. McCain: (Long pause) “Ahhh. I think I support the president’s policy.”

Q: “So no contraception, no counseling on contraception. Just abstinence. Do you think contraceptives help stop the spread of HIV?”

Mr. McCain: (Long pause) “You’ve stumped me.”

Q: “I mean, I think you’d probably agree it probably does help stop it?”

Mr. McCain: (Laughs) “Are we on the Straight Talk express? I’m not informed enough on it. Let me find out. You know, I’m sure I’ve taken a position on it on the past. I have to find out what my position was. Brian, would you find out what my position is on contraception – I’m sure I’m opposed to government spending on it, I’m sure I support the president’s policies on it.”

Q: “But you would agree that condoms do stop the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. Would you say: ‘No, we’re not going to distribute them,’ knowing that?”

Mr. McCain: (Twelve-second pause) “Get me Coburn’s thing, ask Weaver to get me Coburn’s paper that he just gave me in the last couple of days. I’ve never gotten into these issues before.”

A sitting United States Senator does not know if condoms can help prevent AIDS??? My God, the wheels haven't just come off the Republican party, the whole damned chassis fell out too! You know, I've really got to quote Bugs Bunny on this one: "What a maroon!"

McCain says troops lives "wasted".

In a stunning display of IOKIYAR (It's OK If You're A Republican), McCain said we're wasting troops' lives:

Discussing the war with Letterman, McCain repeated his assertion that U.S. troops must remain in Iraq rather than withdrawing early even though the war has been mismanaged.

"Americans are very frustrated, and they have every right to be," McCain said. "We've wasted a lot of our most precious treasure, which is American lives."

McCain: Withdrawing from Iraq is Unacceptable

In this interview with Anderson Cooper, McCain said he can see no scenario other than victory by which troops might leave Iraq, even if it means we're going to be stuck there a very long time.

COOPER: Is there any scenario in which withdrawing troops would be acceptable to you, or redeploying them?

MCCAIN: Not until we have the situation under control, to the degree that the Iraqi government can exert its influence through most of the country, that you start with the — that you move forward with a political and economic process.

McCain hopes to mend fences with James Dobson

Contrary to the popular perception of McCain as a maverick willing to stand up against his party's more conservative supporters, John McCain is now trying to patch it up with some of the most notorious leaders of the Christian fundamentalist movement. After previously singing the praises of Jerry Falwell, he's now trying to win over James Dobson.

COLUMBIA, South Carolina (AP) -- Sen. John McCain said Tuesday he hopes to patch things up with conservative Christian leader James Dobson, who recently said he wouldn't support the Republican's presidential bid under any circumstances.

In a radio interview with KCBI, a Dallas Christian station, Dobson argued that McCain didn't support traditional marriage values and said he has prayed "we won't get stuck with him." Dobson is founder of Focus on the Family, based in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

"I'm obviously disappointed and I'd like to continue and have a dialogue with Dr. Dobson and other members of the community," McCain said Tuesday during a stop in Columbia. (Watch Dobson vowed never to vote for McCain Video)

McCain has said gay marriage should not be legal but has angered some conservatives with his opposition to a constitutional amendment banning same-sex unions. The Arizona senator said the issue should be left to the states.

Americans have a right to know - does John McCain endorse or even condone the out-of-the-mainstream fundamentalist views of Dobson and Falwell? Note, these are people him himself labeled "agents of intolerance" in his 2000 campaign. Which is it Senator?

Welcome

Finally got this going. I know it's behind a bit; I apologize for the delay, I've been fairly busy this last week.
